1. Thoroughly clean the lap spindle and
the drive table on your faceting machine. Make certain
that your drive table does not have any embedded grit.
2. Follow this new mounting technique.
Securely grasp the edges of the lap with fingers of both
hands and use both thumbs to support the edges of the
center insert as you place the lap on your machine.
3. Secure the fastening nut. DO NOT OVER
TIGHTEN. Finger tight is sufficient. This is IMPORTANT!
4. Always start out with light pressure
when grinding to remove sharp edges.
5. Even pressure sweeps of the faceting
arm will allow the surface to wear at the constant rate
across the entire face of the lap. Moving larger flat
surfaces across the face of the lap accomplishes the same
thing.
6. Remember a basic point in stone
cutting: the more material you try to remove with a finer
grit the faster you will wear out the lap. It's much
better to use coarser grit laps to remove stock. Resin
bounded laps have been found useful for refining large cut
flats up to 2 1/2 inch. Our resin bounded surface is not
recommended for any other purpose such as cabochon cutting
or edging.
7. Take care that you DO NOT DROP the
faceting arm, the dop stick, or a stone on the lap.
Penetration of the diamond coating will ruin the lap.
8. Use a generous amount of water on the
lap to provide adequate cooling and lubrication. NEVER USE
THE LAP WITHOUT WATER!
9. Keep laps dry when not in use.
10. Do not drop a lap or disc on the
floor! It will change its accuracy.
